AWAM collaborates with the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Legal Aid Centre, which assigns aspiring future lawyers, known as chambering/legal pupils, to provide free legal information. These legal pupils are attached to AWAM’s Legal Aid Centre for 14 days over a span of 3 months.
Every three months, a new batch of legal pupils joins us to offer legal information to survivors. AWAM ensures they receive proper training and are equipped with the necessary skills to handle the Telenita helpline and provide appropriate legal information.
AWAM primarily offers individual counseling sessions. Couple and family counseling sessions can be arranged upon request, subject to the availability of our intern counselors.
AWAM provides counseling sessions specifically for mental health concerns related to gender-based violence. For example, supporting a survivor experiencing
post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of abuse by her ex-husband.
If a client/ survivor has a diagnosed mental health condition, such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or other similar conditions, we will refer them to the appropriate mental health institution to ensure they receive the necessary treatment.
No, AWAM does not have the expertise to provide immediate assistance for suicide-related calls. We typically refer such cases to suicide helplines, such as Befrienders, for specialized support.
For emergencies, we strongly encourage survivors to contact 999 for immediate help.
At AWAM, counseling services are provided by intern counselors who are undergoing their internship as part of the requirement to complete their Master's in Counseling to be a licensed and registered counsellor with Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia (LKM).
For those seeking sessions with other mental health professionals such as licensed and registered counsellor, psychologist or psychiatrist, we provide referrals to the appropriate organizations or service providers.
We do not recommend walk-ins, as our counseling services are appointment-based. To book a free counseling session in your preferred language, please contact our Telenita helplines via call or WhatsApp at (016-2374221 / 016-2284221).
No, we do not have a shelter. If a survivor/ client requires shelter, we refer them to other NGOs or agencies that can provide accommodation, such as the Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO) or the Social Welfare Department (JKM). To contact JKM, we advise clients to reach out directly to Talian Kasih (15999). We also inform clients that WAO has its own criteria for accepting individuals. Additionally, we refer survivors/ clients to other shelters and encourage them to make the calls themselves.
